Knocked Up: A crude comedy about sex, drugs and pregnancy

by Jennifer Johnson

Issue date: 6/1/07

Two polar opposites meet one night in a club, have too much to drink, and have a one-night stand with an uncomfortable parting the next morning.

Eight weeks later, career-oriented Alison (Grey's Anatomy star Katherine Heigl) and ultimate slacker Ben (the biggest role yet for 24-year-old Seth Rogen) make a little trip to the OBGYN.

It's a plot that too many young people are living today, but least in the movies, the happy ending is always in sight. That being said, this tale from writer/director Judd Apatow (The 40 Year Old Virgin), manages to straddle the line between comedy and romance without ever crossing into the chick-flick genre of movies like Music and Lyrics, or (God forbid) The Wedding Date.

Ben and Alison try to establish some sort of relationship for their unborn child's sake, and do so with the appropriate awkwardness that makes the situation a little more believable.

Oddly enough, you might want to see it on a first date.

Knocked Up is rated R for extensive drug use and language (as well as an unexpected shot from the big event), but for the most part, is a feel-good movie about making the best out of all life's unexpected deliveries.
